The happiest and most successful academics are those who blend professional tasks. This workshop will invite participants to seek ways to merge research interests with traditional academic responsibilities in order to alleviate burnout and envision ways to capture more fully work that they are already doing or would like to be doing. By viewing interests and expertise through the lens of institutional mission statements and initiatives, teacher-scholars find opportunities for engaging in personally satisfying work that also aligns with institutional goals.

In this workshop, participants will be invited to consider and to apply the term “scholarly” to teaching and mentoring, professional service, and scholarship and creative activity in preparing for both annual and multi-year reviews. Being able to describe the scholarly dimension or nature of all faculty work is an important step in articulating the quality and significance of that work. Furthermore, approaching all work as scholarly work also can create additional opportunities for scholarship and creative activity that may not be immediately visible.
