Faculty have to create a classroom climate welcoming of student participation and still productive for learning, and that can be a tricky balance. When the opinions expressed are unsophisticated or misinformed, or punctuated by an inappropriate tone, it can be challenging. This seminar will review best practices to create a good climate from the get go, and explore what recourse faculty have when situations reach a boiling point. Using past examples, we will also review relevant policies and procedures so that chairs can effectively advise their faculty.

This workshop will provide tools to identify and address a range of legal issues relevant to immigrant matters when you are hiring faculty. Participants will have the opportunity to pose questions arising from situations they have encountered and learn how to locate resources to help resolve them.

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) uses methodology from the various disciplines to examine student learning and classroom practices for the purposes of improving one's own teaching and culminating in dissemination of a scholarly product. Misconceptions about SoTL and its rigor abound, and SoTL microcultures differ by discipline. Chairs and Deans are invited to attend this workshop to learn how to evaluate and encourage rigorous teaching-related scholarship within their colleges.

KSU is required to document and justify that each faculty member is qualified to teach assigned courses. I will provide best practices for writing justifications for faculty whose teaching assignments are based on qualifications other than traditional academic credentials. KSU is also required to notify SACSCOC of any proposed substantive changes in accordance with SACSCOC Substantive Change policy and, when necessary, obtain approval prior to the initiation of the changes. I will discuss common substantive changes at KSU, the steps for addressing these changes, and implications for unreported substantive changes.

Chairs and directors’ responsibilities include managing the unit’s budget and working with their business manager to abide by the procedures and policies of the university as well as applicable laws. In this session we will review the scope of the chairs and directors’ budgetary responsibilities, the range of software systems that are used to monitor and spend the budget, and the financial cycle of decisions and deadlines, with the opportunity to ask questions tailored to the needs of specific units.

Teaching effectiveness is a complex variable to assess. As we know, it cannot rely on students evaluations of teaching alone, and instead it needs to be triangulated with other metrics to get the full picture of student learning, satisfaction, and success. In this workshop we will explore best practices to evaluate teaching. We will also discuss how to mentor faculty so they are well positioned to write a compelling teaching narrative, and review campus resources for struggling faculty
